Gina Scaramella, the Executive Director of BARCC, will receive the Gerard D. Downing Leadership Award from Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA) on April 29th. The award recognizes an agency leader who has demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing the rights of crime victims and is recognized by his or her colleagues for their efforts in advancing victim rights. It honors the legacy of the late Berkshire County District Attorney Gerard D. Downing whose longstanding and dedicated service as DA and on the Victim and Witness Assistance Board continues to advance the plight of crime victims.
Ms. Scaramella began her work at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center as a volunteer counselor in the 1990’s, and in 2001, became the Executive Director. No matter her role over these many years, Ms. Scaramella has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the areas of sexual violence prevention and intervention. She works diligently and with unwavering commitment to foster collaborations across backgrounds, perspectives, roles and communities, empowering each person to become an “agent of change” in addressing the problem of sexual violence.
Ms. Scaramella has been instrumental in developing and implementing many initiatives including: medical advocacy services that are now a national victim services model; sexual assault curricula for law enforcement; a statewide toxicology reporting service that enables survivors to anonymously obtain toxicology screen results; the first Massachusetts case management program based in a rape crisis center, and a first-in-the-nation campaign in partnership with the MBTA to target sexual harassment on public transportation. Ms. Scaramella continues to motivate her staff to exceed goals and become leaders in their own right while working to advance victim rights and being a champion for survivors, their families and our communities. In 2009 the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center received the National Crime Victim Service Award from the United States Department of Justice, an extremely prestigious award.
An awards ceremony will take place during the Victim Rights Event on April 29th from 9:30 to noon in Gardner Auditorium at the State House.
