Community Awareness and Prevention Services Programs (CAPS)

BARCC offers a variety of educational programs and professional trainings to raise awareness and prevent perpetration of sexual violence. These programs can be offered to middle and high schools, colleges and universities, community groups, parents, staff in social service agencies, teachers, health care providers, and employers.

To schedule a workshop at your school or organization call BARRC's Coordinator of Community Awareness and Outreach at 617-492-8306.

Rape: Myths and Facts

The National Justice Department reports that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. This interactive presentation defines rape and discusses rape myths and facts, and provides information about how to deal with the aftermath of an assault.

Sexual Harassment

What's the difference between flirting and sexual harassment? This question and many others will be addressed in this presentation. Participants will learn about hostile environment and quid pro quo harassment. They will also learn how to identify who in their community/workplace can help them if they become targets of harassment.

Rape Trauma Syndrome and Crisis Intervention Theory

This one hour curriculum is geared towards clinicians and health care providers. It focuses on understanding the needs of rape survivors and basic crisis intervention techniques, as well as information on how to deal with disclosures.

Rape Drugs

This presentation discusses designer drugs that are being used as a weapon of rape. Participants will learn about drugs such as Rohypnol, Ecstacy, GHB, and Ketamine. Personal safety tips will be given to help people learn how to lower their risk.

Survivor Speakers Bureau

BARCC provides educators who speak about their personal experience with sexual assault. These presentations tend to work best with smaller groups, as they are often intimate and need to be confidential. Our educators will speak about the assault, the aftermath, and their road to recovery.

Keeping Safe Online

The new generation is a digital generation. The Internet is a great resource, but is also home for sexual predators. This presentation provides information about sexual predators on the net. Predators target young people, especially students who may be vulnerable or lonely, by disguising themselves as caring, online "buddies". Participants will learn what to do if they meet someone online that seems suspicious, as well as general net safety.

The Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project is a traveling demonstration that bears witness to the survivors and victims of sexual and domestic violence. This tribute demonstrates the extent of the problem with a visual impact similar to the AIDS Quilt or to the Vietnam Wall. This is a great exhibit to include at Safety Awareness Days, Health Fairs, to display in your agency or community, or for survivors to participate in. The Clothesline Project has a very powerful message and we recommend that it be displayed in conjunction with one of our workshops, to help process the messages seen.
