The Facts

Youth are particularly at risk.

  • Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely to be the victims of sexual assault or rape than the general population (US Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey, 2000).
  • Female rape survivors: 54% are under 18 years old, and 22% are under 12 (NIJ, National Violence Against Women Survey, 2000; Tjaden and Thoennes, 2000).
  • Male rape survivors: 75% are under 18 years old, and 48% are under 12 (Ibid, 2000).
  • 93% of juvenile sexual assault survivors know their attackers (Sex Offenses and Offenders, Bureau of Justice Statistics, US Department of Justice, 2000).
  • 40% of youth survivors (under 6yrs old) were abused by juveniles under 18yrs old (Bureau of Justice Statistics Report, July 2000).
